Egon Wellesz, Symphony No 1 (1945), México City, March 2018

Egon Wellesz, Symphony No 1 (1945), México City, March 2018

On 18 March 1938, México filed a formal protest note to the League of Nations in Geneva to protest — as sole country — against the “Anschluss”, the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany on 12 March 1938. On March 10 and 11, 2018, Jörg Birhance will conduct a symphonic concert with the Orquesta filarmónica de la Ciudad de México, commemorating 80 years of both the Anschluss and the noble-hearted act of México. The program includes the Mexican first performance of Symphony No 1 by Egon Wellesz (1885–1974), whose exile had begun exactly on 12 March 1938, as representative of the Austrian exiled composers. Further, he will conduct the original […]

Bruno Walter first performed it in Vienna in February 1938 and asked Dr. Mengelberg, the director of Concertgebouw Amsterdam, if he could conduct Prospero instead of “Tod und Verklärung” by Richard Strauss. Dr. Mengelberg invited him to do so, and Bruno Walter and Egon Wellesz went to Amsterdam. The […]
