Egon Wellesz, Symphony No 1 (1945), México City, March 2018

On 18 March 1938, México filed a formal protest note to the League of Nations in Geneva to protest — as sole country — against the “Anschluss”, the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany on 12 March 1938.

On March 10 and 11, 2018, Jörg Birhance will conduct a symphonic concert with the Orquesta filarmónica de la Ciudad de México, commemorating 80 years of both the Anschluss and the noble-hearted act of México.

The program includes the Mexican first performance of Symphony No 1 by Egon Wellesz (1885–1974), whose exile had begun exactly on 12 March 1938, as representative of the Austrian exiled composers. Further, he will conduct the original version of the Suite “Redes” by Silvestre Revueltas (1899–1940) and the Symphony No 92 “Oxford” by Joseph Haydn (1732–1809).

On March 25, Jörg Birhance will conduct the Orquesta filarmónica de Zacatecas. Again in program: Symphony No 1 by Egon Wellesz, the original version of the Suite “Redes” by Silvestre Revueltas, completed by L.v. Beethoven: Piano Concerto No 5 “Empereor”, Soloist: Jeffrey Biegel.

The concerts are kindly supported by Österreichisches Kulturforum in México and the Egon Wellesz-Fonds at Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien.

Special thanks to Scott Yoo (OFCM), Antonio Manzo (OFILZAC), Roberto Kolb Neuhaus (UNAM) as well as very much Rosa María Castro Valle Kühne and Diego Cándano Laris (Mexican Embassy in Vienna).
